*FRENCH 1   

9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Grades - Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                  Year Course

Beginning French serves as an introduction to the French language, which is the official language in 29 countries in the world but also prepares students for exchange and travel abroad.  Students will learn about the French language and culture of France and many francophone countries.  Students will master basic communication skills with an emphasis on listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Students will be able to speak about themselves and their interests, order from a menu, make purchases and perform other daily tasks in French.  Student will have opportunities in and outside of class to learn about, participate and enjoy cultural festivities throughout the year.

 

*FRENCH 2

9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Grades – Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                 Year Course     PrerequisiteCompletion of French 1 with a grade of C or better

This class is the continuation of French 1.  Both oral and written communication is  emphasized.  Instruction includes conversation, role-playing, vocabulary games, listening and writing activities.  Students will gain an understanding of the culture of many Francophone countries through the introduction of geography, history literature, films and videos.  Student will also participate in cultural events throughout the year and prepare for our France or Quebec trip.

 

*FRENCH 3

10th, 11th and 12th Grades – Fulfills Fine Art Requirement              Year Course

PrerequisiteCompletion of French 2 with a grade of C or better

This course will improve proficiency and accuracy in speaking, reading and writing   French while students learn about many Francophone countries and their histories. Emphasis is on improving the student’s fluency in the French language including complex sentence structure and the ability to communicate at a higher level.  Activities include reading articles, playing grammar and vocabulary games, analyzing French films and performing skits.  Cultural activities are celebrated throughout the year.  This class also serves to prepare students for our France or Quebec trip.

 

*FRENCH 4 

11th and 12th Grades – Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                                    Year Course

Prerequisite:   Completion of French 3 with a grade of C or better  

The curriculum for French 4 will be the same as the Advanced Placement (AP) French course.  Students who do not wish to take the Advanced Placement French Language Examination for college credit will complete a project in the topic of their choice with the Permission of their teacher.  Their goal will be to strive towards proficiency in all communications skills in French and to improve their oral participation.  Instructional emphasis will be on idiomatic expression and more complex grammatical structure.

 

*FRENCH ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP)

12th Grade – Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                                                   Year Course

Prerequisite:  Completion of French 4 with a grade of C or better OR completion of French 3 with the recommendation of the teacher.  Requires signed Advanced Placement Course Enrollment Parent Notification /Agreement.

The goal of students in AP French will be to prepare to take the Advanced Placement French Language Examination for college credit.  The students will continue to increase    their proficiency and fluency of the French language by reading authentic texts, listening to authentic audio sources and guest speakers, speaking only French in the classroom and by improving their writing ability through detailed assignments.  The class will improve their knowledge of French grammar as well as analyze current news articles and other authentic texts.

 

*GERMAN 1  

9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Grades - Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                Year Course

Beginning German serves not only as an introduction to the most-widely spoken language in Europe and to the cultures of German-speaking countries (Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Italy, Belgium), but also prepares interested students for our planned exchange trip in the summer (dependent upon School Board approval, world events and host families).  Students will learn the skills to master a new language.  Emphasis is on writing, listening and speaking.  Students will be able to introduce themselves, describe their favorite activities, order from a menu, make purchases and perform other daily tasks in German.  Students will have an opportunity in and outside of class to enjoy many cultural festivities throughout the year and to learn of their significance. 

 

*GERMAN 2

9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Grades – Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                      Year Course

Prerequisite: Completion of German 1 with a grade of C or better

This class is the continuation of German 1.  Both oral and written communication is         emphasized.  Instruction includes role-playing, conversations, grammar and vocabulary games, and     listening and written activities.  Students will gain an understanding of the culture of many German-speaking countries through the introduction of geography, history, literature, films and videos.  Students will also participate in cultural events throughout the year and prepare for our exchange program with a German high school.

 

*GERMAN 3

10th, 11th, and 12th Grades – Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                            Year Course Prerequisite:  Completion of German 2 with a grade of C or better

This course will improve proficiency and accuracy in speaking, reading, and writing German while students learn about many German-speaking countries and their histories.  Emphasis on improving the student’s fluency in the German language including complex sentence structure and the ability to communicate at a higher level.  Activities include reading and writing short stories, playing grammar and vocabulary games, analyzing German films, some cooking, and performing skits.  Cultural activities are celebrated throughout the year and as the students study a particular cultural unit from the text.  This class serves also to prepare the student for our exchange trip with a German high school.

 

*GERMAN 4

11th and 12th Grades – Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                                  Year Course

Prerequisite – Completion of German 3 with a grade of C or better.

The curriculum for German IV is virtually the same as the AP German class. Students not wishing to take the Advanced Placement German Language test for college credit will be given a project to complete on the topic of their choice with permission from their teacher.  The goal of this course is to become as fluent in both written and spoken German as possible. Emphasis will be on perfecting the use of idiomatic expressions and using complex grammatical structures.

 

*GERMAN ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP)

12th Grade – Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                                                   Year Course

Prerequisite – Completion of German 4 with a grade of C or better OR completion of German 3 with the recommendation of the teacher. Requires signed Advanced Placement Course Enrollment Parent Notification /Agreement.

The goal of students in AP German is to prepare for the Advanced Placement German Language examination for college credit. The students will strive to improve their proficiency and fluency of the German language by reading authentic texts, listening to authentic CDs and guest speakers, speaking only in German in the classroom and by improving their writing ability though detailed assignments. The class will improve their knowledge of German grammar and history as well as analyze literature from several German-speaking countries.

 

*SPANISH I                                                                                             

9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Grades – Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                      Year Course

Beginning Spanish not only introduces students to the Spanish language and the cultures of Latin America and Spain, but additionally it prepares students interested in travel abroad. Students will learn communication skills with a focus on writing, listening and speaking. Students will be able to introduce themselves, talk about their personal interests, describe their family, a typical school day, and order from a menu and make purchases.  Students will enjoy cultural festivities as well as learn of their importance.  

     

*SPANISH 2                                                                                           

9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Grades – Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                       Year Course

Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish 1 with a grade of C or better or a passing grade on incoming freshmen placement test into Spanish II

This class is a continuation of Spanish I.  Both oral and written communication is emphasized.  Class instruction includes role-playing, songs, grammar and vocabulary games, and listening and written activities.  Students will gain an understanding of Hispanic and Latin cultures.  Students will participate in cultural events throughout the year.

 

*SPANISH 3                                                                                             

9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Grades – Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                       Year Course

Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish 2 with a grade of C or better or Spanish for Native/Heritage Speakers 1

This course will improve proficiency and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading and writing Spanish while students learn about Hispanic and Latin cultures.  An emphasis is on improving the student’s fluency in the Spanish language including complex grammatical structure and the ability to communicate at a higher level.  Activities include reading authentic texts, writing short essays and opinion papers, and presentations. Cultural activities are celebrated throughout the year.

 

*SPANISH 4

9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Grades - Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                      Year Course

Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish 3 with a grade of C or better

The curriculum for Spanish 4 will be the same as the Advanced Placement Spanish course, but  students will not be required to complete AP summer work and weekly homework assignments that prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Exam.  Students will continue to strive towards proficiency in all communication skills in Spanish.  

*SPANISH ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP)                                                 Year Course

The goal of students in the AP Spanish will be to prepare to take the Advanced Placement Spanish Language Examination for college credit.  Students will be required to complete summer work and weekly homework assignments that prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Exam. The students will continue to increase their proficiency and fluency of the Spanish language by improving proficiency and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading and writing Spanish while learning about Hispanic and Latin cultures.   Activities include reading authentic texts, writing short essays and opinion papers, and presentations.  Cultural activities are celebrated throughout the year.

 

*SPANISH FOR NATIVE/HERITAGE SPEAKERS 1

9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Grades – Fulfills Fine Art Requirement                  Year Course     PrerequisiteHome Language is Spanish or Spanish & English

Spanish Native Speaker 1 explores Spanish-speaking world cultures, emphasizing the complexities, similarities and differences among the 21 Spanish-speaking countries. The students will receive specialized instruction and have access to materials that will build upon their existing language competencies while fostering their bilingualism. At the conclusion of this course the students will be able to read intermediate texts for understanding and formulate questions regarding the topics introduced. This course includes standard spelling and language usage. Students will -write short essays and opinion papers on selected topics in academic standard Spanish. This course offers Spanish-speaking student’s opportunities to study Spanish formally in an academic setting in the same way native English-speaking students study English language arts.  After completion of this course, student will take Spanish 3.

 

*YUROK LANGUAGE 1, 2, 3, 4 (MHS)

9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Grades - Fulfills Fine Art Requirement             Year Course

This course is designed to provide students with opportunities to communicate effectively in the language and to appreciate the local Native American culture.  Students will learn the alphabet and discuss Berkley system.  Special emphasis will be placed on oral communication as is appropriate in this cultural context.  Yurok 2 will be a more in-depth study of the language.  Lessons will build upon the four areas of competency: Listening, speaking, reading and writing.
