Kayla Gaskill (KG)

Greetings, I go by Ms. KG and I’m excited to be teaching Art 1 for the 2022-23 school year here at Arcata High! I have an Associate’s degree in Studio Art from West Valley College, a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art & Art Education, as well as a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Art, both from HSU/Cal Poly Humboldt. I was born and raised in Campbell, CA and have been enjoying living amongst the coastal redwoods since January 2019.  When I’m not teaching or making art, I enjoy spending my time being in nature or being with my loved ones, dancing and engaging in flow arts, going to the movies, and listening to live music.

My passion for visual art stems from my deep curiosity towards aesthetic value and my interest in meaning-making processes, such as recognizing patterns and discovering interconnectedness through creative expression.  Providing students with opportunities to expand their interests and ideas through aesthetics and visual communication endows them with tools which they can carry with them while navigating life–in and out of the art classroom.

My ultimate goal as an art educator is to lead students in the direction of curiosity with a growth-based mindset that favors learning, adapting, and discovering new ways to express their passions and values. Through a caring, empathetic, and adaptable approach, strengthened by individualization and connectedness, my teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of building positive reciprocal relationships with my students.
